The news that Travis Scott would be performing with Maroon 5 at the Super Bowl this year was officially announced at the end of 2018. And only after Scott announced that he, along with the NFL would be donating $500,000 to the non-profit social-justice organization “Dream Corps.”

This was likely in hopes of dodging some of the criticism the performers had been receiving for agreeing to perform at the super bowl, due to the NFL’s treatment of former San Francisco 49er’s quarterback, Colin Kaepernick. You may remember back in 2016, Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem as his way of protesting injustice in America. Since then, he has been more or less banned from professional football and a large number of people feel this is a move based on racism

Well as it turns out, Scott and Kaepernick had a phone conversation prior to Scott’s agreement to perform at the game. A close source to Scott confirmed that while the two didn’t necessarily agree, they did leave the conversation with respect for one another and a new understanding. Scott took the stance that everyone can make a statement in their own way and felt that with the money going to Dream Corps combined with the platform provided with the Super Bowl, they would be able to do a lot of good. According to the source, Scott said he would not agree to do the performance until the donation was locked down.
